Amazon invests $100 million in Indiana

Amazon is expanding its domestic manufacturing footprint with a more than $100 million investment in a new advanced manufacturing facility in Greenwood, Indiana. The 585,000-square-foot plant will produce robotics and fulfillment infrastructure for its North American operations.

The new Greenwood facility will integrate advanced fabrication, robotic welding, automated powder coating, and assembly capabilities under one roof. This integrated approach is designed to streamline the production of robots that power Amazon's extensive fulfillment and robotics network.

Investment and job creation

Amazon's investment exceeds $100 million. The company expects the facility to create 300 skilled manufacturing and engineering positions.

Average annual pay for these jobs is nearly $100,000. The planned roles include a wide range of technical and engineering functions.

"The facility will result in 300 skilled manufacturing and engineering jobs," Amazon said.

Role in Amazon’s robotics ecosystem

The robots manufactured in Indiana will be deployed across more than 300 Amazon facilities globally. These machines are integral to the company's logistics, assisting with stowing, picking, sorting, and intra-facility transport within fulfillment centers.

Amazon stated that robots assist employees with 75% of all customer orders the company delivers worldwide. The company already has more than 1 million robots operating in its fulfillment centers. Since 2010, Amazon has manufactured more than one million robots domestically.

The Greenwood facility will be supported by AWS and AI-powered smart manufacturing systems. This shows the deep integration of Amazon's cloud computing and artificial intelligence divisions into its physical production processes.

Strategic context and timeline

This Indiana project follows an August announcement of a new robotics manufacturing investment in Texas. Amazon has also built one of the world's largest industrial robotics manufacturing operations at its facilities in Massachusetts.

The company selected Greenwood based on Indiana's established manufacturing workforce, competitive cost structure, logistics infrastructure, and business-friendly environment. The facility is expected to launch by 2028.

When operational, the site will represent a significant node in Amazon's in-house robotics supply chain. It is designed to support the growing automation within its vast network of fulfillment centers.
