Winton Machine CEO on Starting a Manufacturing Business

Lisa Winton, CEO and co-owner of Winton Machine Company, says now is the time to start a manufacturing business. She advised prospective entrepreneurs to take opportunities as they come and to look to available resources for support.

Winton made the comments in an interview on the "Business Trends Today" series from America's Small Business Network. The Suwanee, Georgia-based company, which is 29 years old and produces factory automation equipment, began with an unexpected phone call.

An Unusual Start

Winton recounted the company's origins. Her husband and co-owner, George Winton, who has an engineering background, wrote a technical article that mentioned a specific type of fixture. Someone read it and called to ask if they could make those fixtures.

"We didn't have anything. We had a screwdriver, a wrench-like, nothing," Winton told host Jim Fitzpatrick. "[But] we were like, 'Sure, we can do it.... We'll figure out a way to do it.'" Today, Winton Machine employs around 40 people and does business in approximately 15 countries.

Recent Recognition and Support

In July, the Small Business Administration named Winton Machine a finalist in its Freedom 250 Patriot Pitch Competition. The contest celebrates America's 250th anniversary by bringing together entrepreneurs who are building businesses in their communities.

On September 18, the finalists will compete in Washington, D.C., for $1 million in prize funding, according to SBA Southeast Regional Administrator Tyler Teresa, who also appeared on the episode. Teresa noted that 98% of all manufacturers are small businesses and highlighted recent SBA steps to support them.

These steps include the "Made in America" bank loan program, which offers loans with a 90% federal guarantee. In May, the SBA also decoupled 7(a) loan balances from the 504 loan program, allowing businesses to now receive up to $10 million in financing.

Advice for New Entrepreneurs

Winton's central advice is to act. "If you're interested in starting a manufacturing business, this is the time in our country to do it," she said. She emphasized use resources, specifically mentioning her involvement with the National Association of Manufacturers.

"We're a member of the National Association of Manufacturers; I sit on the board, and I have found it incredibly helpful in all aspects," Winton stated. "We have a great community out there." The company's journey from a simple tool set to an international operation exemplifies her call to embrace opportunities, even without a clear initial plan.
